  1. HI!!!
Am i supposed to comment here? > <
Could I ask some things about jaw surgery? I have this jaw issue (lower jaw sticks out :/ )and am considering surgery. What made you choose surgery over just braces, couldn't braces fix your bite?

Did you have any extractions beforehand?

Also, how was general anesthesia? I read some scary things on the web about GA and memory loss, depression, absent mindedness, damage to cognitive fxn etc. It's freaking me out(more so than the actual cutting up my face thing)! Especially since I would need to be under GA for like 4+ hours.

Oh, did your face become shorter or wider after? My face is not narrow, so I'm worried will jaw surgery would make my face too small or too short! It's okay for people with long narrow faces, but def not for me!

Does the surgery or braces help with the cheek area? My cheeks are pancake flat :0

Okok, last question! (sorry for the bother!)
Did your surgeon (name please? :D) do anything else? Like genioplasty(moving chin), mandible reduction or using bone for paranasal/cheek implants? The surgeon I consulted suggested genioplasty and paranasals for me. Hmmm -.-

Thanks in advance! You look gorgeous now, btw :D
This blog is really informative too :)

  2. hi magadalene!

    1) yes, my bite wouldn't have been fully corrected with braces alone. in fact, my orthodontist/ surgeon actually told me that if i didn't go ahead with surgery, i might as well not do braces at all as it wouldn't improve my bite that much!

    2) i did have 2 extractions beforehand! 2 pre-molars, before i put on my braces.

    3) GA was totally fine! i'd even go so far as to say... it was great. i was out like a light, and when i came to, the surgery was well and over. don't freak out! yes, it's definitely a risk, but it's very common to go under GA.

    4) my face definitely became shorter! but my face was and still is kind of long and narrow so it's still long. my cheeks are still puffy though and i think it's going to be like that forever, haha.

    5) my surgeon, dr winston tan, did genioplasty for me too! to be honest, i cannot be sure. i know i should know these things, and i'm under the impression that i had genioplasty done, but i don't know why i think so or what gave me that impression. haha. not very helpful, i realize. i should actually go take a look at my surgery records to be sure!

    hope this helps!

  3. Hello!!!

You have one of the most extensive and super sharing blog about such surgeries ever. Thank you so so so much for sharing and all the best to your super gorgeous years to come! :)

I'm also suffering from underbite and worse, i have crooked teeth set too. I reckon I will be on braces even longer to straighten out my teeth and then make my lower jaw even more protruding before I embark on a journey of jaw surgery + recover and more braces/retainers ><

I am already a working adult so getting this done is like harder for me T.T I have so many people to answer to. My mum and boyfriend are ok with the way I look and feel that its not necessary I do this. But I am not 100% confident until I can smile nicely again. I always feel awkward taking photos because I have a protruding lower jaw and crooked teeth which makes my smile look kind of terrible and unnatural on photos.

My bf is a photographer and this kind of kicks my inferior complex in the balls (lol). I really hope to embark on this journey earlier if not for the costs but oh well. better late than never?

Sorry for being so long winded, had no one to share such experiences and thoughts with. most people around me are all born with perfect jawline. My brother and me both suffer the same fate so its hereditary.

Just wanted to ask the following:
    - where did you get your consultation and braces done? Same doctor?
    - How much was your total braces costs? How long were you on braces?
    - Your dentist/orthodontist then referred you to Dr Winston Tan for double-jaw surgery? Did you consult him first before you decided to do surgery with him? Were there other doctors you were also referred to and finally decided on Dr Winston Tan?
    - How much was the surgery and after-care / consultation costs?
    - How long were you warded / in-ward patient before you could be discharged to recover at home?

Sorry for the influx of questions Im just so excited I found your blog, eager to hear from you soon. I will read your blog in detail to get more information if you have already left it there? Thanks in advance!!!! ><

    1. hi lynn,

thanks for your comments on the blog, i'm glad it's helping people! i know the kind of hesitation and fear that comes with jaw surgery, so i wanted to provide a resource from someone who's been there and done that.

first and foremost, you are definitely not late! it is never too late to want to correct your bite and perfect your smile. never too late :) i was a working adult (still am, of course) when i started and it didn't actually cause too much trouble except for the 1 month MC post surgery.

anyway, i understand COMPLETELY what you're saying about your bite and your inferiorities. trust me when i say i was in EXACTLY the same boat. i think most of us who have to have jaw surgery (and choose to go ahead with it) feel the exact same way!!!

      1) braces - dr alfred cheng @ mount e. cost was about $4000! i was on braces for about a year, then jaw surgery, then braces for 6 more months. the entire process took about 1.5 years (19 jan 2010 to 18 july 2011 :)

      2) yes, dr. cheng referred me to dr winston tan. of course i had a consultation with him before deciding to proceed with surgery!! dr. ta (and most orthos) will refer you to surgeons that they normally work with. in my case. dr. cheng referred me to dr. tan and another dr (forgot her name) from a public hospital and told me to have consultations with both of them before making a decision. after meeting dr. tan, i was so reassured by him that i did not even meet the other doctor. i just knew that he was the surgeon i wanted. perhaps i shouldn't have been so rash, but i do not regret my decision at all :) he is fantastic.

      3) cost-wise, perhaps you should email me!

      4) was warded for about 2 days after surgery! that was it!

don't worry about the questions. i understand the trepidation completely. yes, the process is no fun. having to exaggerate an underbite that you're already insecure about is no fun. but it is very, very worth it. it's truly the best decision i've made in my life.

      good luck with everything!

  4. Hii! :)

I've been following your blog for months. And wow, your result is great! :D Congratulations!

I have also an Underbite for as long as i could remember. I'm so happy that i've found someone that went through the same thing i'm going through now. I live in Malaysia. And i'm going to Singapore for my surgery in 8 days!

Your surgeon is Dr. Winston Tan right? Coincidentally my surgeon is also him! :D i'm pretty excited bout the whole surgery cause my bite is quite bad i could say. Its been affecting me my whole life. As in eating and talking and all. But what affects me the most how i look i guess. I look like a bull dog!

But now i'm quite scared about the healing process. What do i eat for the first two months? and i'm not staying in Singapore so that makes everything much much harder for me. ><

I'm also having double jaw surgery. And did your nose get bigger after the surgery? I already have a huge nose, i'm just afraid that its gonna go bigger after surgery LOL.

Your blog really helped me alot. :) Thanks in advance!

    Loves,
    Wiinters

  6. hi, not sure if you will see this but right now i'm considering jaw surgery with dr winston tan and braces with dr cheng as well! can i ask did your looks change dramatically? i have a pretty big and long chin and im not sure if double jaw surgery will make it look bigger :/ like i've read online that moving your lower jaw backwards makes your chin look longer? is that true? thanks!!

oh also did you use medisave to pay for your bills?

  8. Hello! just wondering about how you dealt with the part whereby they exaggerate your underbite because thats the part whereby I hate the most, esp when I'm still schooling.
I'm really scared and I dont know if I should really do it. But then again looking at how you dont regret a single bit makes me wanna do it hahaha

    1. hi anon! i dealt with it just by living through it - which is to say i didn't really do much! the change is very gradual, and by the time it gets really serious, i told myself it meant that it i was that much closer to surgery, and it kept me going. i totally understand the fear, but at least for me, it was the best decision i've ever made! hope you reach a decision soon and if you have any questions please do feel free to ask me because i really understand the trepidation behind it!

  10. Hi, I need some help here. I have consulted dr tan and dr cheng, decided I need both orthodontics and surgery. However I'm very worried about the nerves recovery.
Dr Tan did mentioned about small no of people who will never recover from the damaged nerves. Do u have such problem? Do u have biting difficulties now after your recovery? Like chewing meat and biting apples? I have so much to ask. I hope u can help me..

    1. hi there, happy to help! yes, with every surgery comes their fair share of risks, and unresponsive nerves may be one of the possibilities that comes with jaw surgery. i recovered fully, though, and i fully believe that the benefits for jaw surgery far outweigh their risks! i have absolutely no problem eating anything at all, regardless of texture. i am a huge proponent of jaw surgery (when suggested by the doctors) so please do feel free to let me know if you have any questions, i'll be happy to help if i can.

  11. Hi! Thank you so much for the reply. May I know the cost for ur op is how many years back? As of today, Doc Winston told me that it's about 25k in Mount A now. The cost is like wow~~ doubled from yours in such a short amt of years. I was hoping that it would be lesser than that.
